Foglizzo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,331 · Postal code: 10090

The village was a compulsory stop on the via Cursi, the fastest paved road towards Gaul, and it first appears in 882, in a diploma of Charles the Fat, among the holdings of the bishop of Vercelli. Its coat of arms shows an uprooted beech between two lions.

For generations Foglizzo was the village of brooms. Its red broomcorn grew nowhere else, tough and supple, sown along the edges of the fields as a by-crop; it was cut at the end of summer and turned into brooms in the stables over winter, each one stitched by hand. The trade is gone: only the older people remember it.
