Montanaro

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,375 · Postal code: 10017

There are three explanations of the name, and they do not agree. According to Ponchia it would come from monte nero, black hill, because the village stands raised above the bank of the Orco and was once ringed by thick dark woods; others see a Celtic root in the suffix -nar.

The third, argued by R. Bena after Rossebastiano, derives it from the Latin montanus with the suffix -arius, the one that marks a trade: montanarius, as in the dialect furnèr, baker, and maslèr, butcher. In that case the name would tell a job and not a place: the flocks coming down from the upper Orco valley wintered here, where there was water enough for the animals.
