San Benigno Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,615 · Postal code: 10080

The town exists because of an abbey. Fruttuaria was founded in 1003 by William of Volpiano inside the Selva Gerulfa, in a then almost empty area, and the workmen who came to build it made the settlement, which stayed under the abbots' control.

Little of that abbey is still in sight: it was pulled down in the eighteenth century and replaced by the present church, the work of Vittone and Quarini. The bell tower is still standing, from the early eleventh century, while the mosaic of the griffins came to light with the foundations of the Romanesque church and is visited under today's floor. In 1741 the pope handed the territory to Savoy.
