Saint John the Baptist, patron of the Canavese town
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Bosconero celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
The first documents date from 882 and call the place Roveredum, for the oaks that grew here. Then, since those woods had dark timber, the name became simply Bosco-nigro, the black wood. From the eleventh century the peasants of the abbey of Fruttuaria cleared the forest into fields; but the Orco flooded so often that in the fourteenth century the village was moved a couple of kilometres back from the banks.
The two hamlets that grew out of it, Bosco Negro and Lotti, were parts of Rivarolo, and only in 1694 were they joined into a comune of their own. Here, as across much of the Canavese, textile hemp was grown: in the Gerbido park you can still see the pits where the thread was dried, called canavere in dialect.
