Lanzo Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,150 · Postal code: 10074

The origins of the name are uncertain. According to Milone it would come from the lance shape of the village, from lanceum, but the sameness with two French communes beyond the Mont Cenis, Lanslebourg and Lanslevillard, makes that doubtful; others derive it from the German Lanzman, which once meant country, or from lands freies, free lands.

In the documents the name keeps changing shape: it appears as de Lances, becomes Delancius in 1203, Lanz in 1211, Lanzeus in 1296. The town stands at the mouth of the three valleys named after it, Viù, Ala and the Grande, and its old centre is built on Monte Buriasco while the rest lies lower down.
