Balangero

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,161 · Postal code: 10070

The arms show a tower, that of the tenth-century castle, with two cannonballs lodged in its masonry: they recall that here, for the first time in Italy, artillery was used during a siege. Above are the blazons of the lords: the cross of Savoy, who ruled from 1356, and the crowned eagle of the viscounts of Baratonia, who held Balangero in fief for over two centuries.

For some eighty years, between Balangero and neighbouring Corio, an asbestos quarry was worked, reckoned the largest open-cast one in Europe. The town lies at the mouth of the Lanzo valleys, crossed by the Banna stream.
