Traves is a scattered municipality in the Valli di Lanzo, its main village where the Stura di Lanzo and the Stura di Viù meet. The name is unclear: the best argued reading takes it from intra aives, between the waters, and the village does sit between the two streams. Others go round, among them the beams once used to cross the Stura. From 1939 to 1967 it was written Trave, in the singular.
The village long lived on copper and nickel mines, and its people were nailmakers: the trade now has its own ecomuseum. The parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli, seventeenth century, closes a square with a cobbled star set in the paving.
