Cafasse

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,511 · Postal code: 10070

The name would come from Cafaxie, "scattered houses, houses in bunches", and it tells how the place began: small rural clusters and farmsteads on ground the waters of the Stura had left free. The oldest document to name it is a diploma of Conrad the Salic dated around 1000, where the form is Leocaffis: that Cafaxie derives from it is not proven.

The settlement was destroyed several times, by Hungarian raiders, by plague, by floods, and once the inhabitants crossed to the far bank of the Stura di Lanzo and founded a new village, which they called Villanova. From 1660 they asked to break away from Balangero and Mathi, which resisted: it took royal letters patent in 1767 to make them a community of their own.
