The name has been pulled back and forth for a century: in 1939 a royal decree took the y out of Leynì, after the war people started writing it again, in 2000 the town statute fixed Leinì with the accent, and in 2009 the Interior Ministry took everything back to the 1939 decree — Leini, no y and no accent.
The town belonged to the Provana from 1325: in 1331 the community and its lords agreed to draw the built-up area inside ditches and open three gates, and the walls followed from 1380. The family's most famous member is Andrea Provana, the admiral who commanded the Savoy galleys at Lepanto — but he never set foot in Leini. There are 15,320 residents.

Leini celebrates Saint Lawrence on 10 August; until the Covid-19 period, the traditional patronal feast dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows was also held for ten days between late August and early September, accompanied by the «ExpoTedeschi» fair.
