Borgaro Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 11,723 · Postal code: 10071

Borgaro lies north of Turin, on the Roman road to Ivrea and the Lanzo valleys: in the fields towards Caselle, traces of Roman centuriation can still be read. The name may come from the Latin burgarium, a fortified settlement, and in the early twelfth century the village moved from the old road to today's centre, around the castle that is now a convent.

In 1746 the whole of Borgaro became a fief of the Birago, who took the title of counts: their double-crenellated bands are still on the town's arms. Until the mid twentieth century this was farming country; then the growth of Fiat and the Turin factories changed it within a few decades, and housing estates took the place of fields.
