Mappano is one of the youngest municipalities in Italy: it was established on 31 January 2013 by splitting off from Caselle Torinese, Borgaro Torinese, Settimo Torinese and Leini. It took almost thirty years: the first committee dates from 1985, the referendum from 1992, and only on 21 February 2017, after a legal battle fought through the regional court, the Council of State and the Constitutional Court, did it become fully operative.
The first documents naming it are of the thirteenth century, when the marshy area was known as the muds. The name almost certainly comes from the Amapano, a well-off family that owned land here. In the seventeenth century the reclamation and the Jesuits' Naviglio canal opened it to farming, and the trade of the lavandé was born, who for decades washed the linen of Turin.
