Macello

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,238 · Postal code: 10060

The name Macello may go back to the Magelli, an ancient Ligurian tribe, though firm proof is lacking. How the village began is unclear: it first appears in documents in 1026. The castle came later, in the thirteenth century, when prince Philip of Achaea had it built beside the ricetto that already stood there.

In 1396 castle and village passed to the Solaro, a Guelph family from Asti, who held them until Napoleon: four centuries without changing hands. At the end of the twentieth century the last owner, a De Ferrari of Genoa, sold the castle to local partners, who made it a meeting place.
