Moncrivello

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,465 · Postal code: 13040

Moncrivello is the only comune of the province of Vercelli lying in the Canavese. An eighteenth-century historian read its name as Monscaprarum, the hill of the goats, and in that form the village appears in a diploma of emperor Henry VI in 1191; the coat of arms agrees, with a goat rearing against a mulberry tree.

In 1399 the villagers threw off Antonio Fieschi, the lord the pope had imposed on them, and gave themselves to the House of Savoy. Yolande of France later turned the stronghold into a residence: the swallow-tailed merlons on the curtain walls come from that work, and the duchess died in the castle in 1478.
