Mezzenile

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 834 · Postal code: 10070

Mezzenile lies in the Lanzo Valleys, on the right bank of the Stura, and its land climbs from the valley floor to the ridge that separates the Stura from the Viù valley. On the coat of arms, along a silver band, sit eight black nails: nailmaking was one of the main trades here, and a small museum at Forneri recalls it. To the north the municipality once reached Pessinetto.

The parish church of San Martino Vescovo was consecrated in 1868, but is far older, and the bell tower still keeps Romanesque work. The Pugnetto caves lie in the same territory, the longest in Italy among those opening in calcschist, protected for its underground wildlife.
