Ceres lies in the Valli di Lanzo, where the Val Grande and the Val d'Ala meet; between 1937 and 1947 the name was italianised to Cere. Popular tradition traces it to Ceres, goddess of harvests, who appears on the town arms, or to a wealth of wild cherry trees; others take it back to the Latin personal name Cirrus.
In the village stands the Romanesque bell tower of Santa Marcellina, square-based, twenty-one metres high: all that survives of a parish complex brought down by a landslide. Bare stone up to the belfry, where two orders of twin windows open under the spire, and two shields with a cross look over the square.
