Mombello di Torino

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 411 · Postal code: 10020

The name says what it seems to, monte bello, the fine hill, but it is not the oldest: from the twelfth century the village was called Monte della Frasca, and under that name it appears in the diploma by which Frederick Barbarossa confirmed the marquis of Monferrato's possession in 1164. The arms bear a gold M and seven ears of wheat.

From 1927 to 1947 Mombello ceased to be a municipality, merged into neighbouring Arignano, and recovered its autonomy only after the war. Above the roofs of the old centre rises the brick bell tower of the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, its clock face set halfway up.
