The name most likely comes from a Roman family name: Arenius, Arinius or Alenius. The rocca first appears in 1047, in a diploma of the emperor Henry III for the chapter of San Salvatore in Turin; of the castle that replaced it at the end of the thirteenth century, little survives beyond part of the keep.
When the rocca lost its purpose, the Costa of Arignano built the Quattro Torri castle further down, a square fortified house with four cylindrical turrets. Within a century it had declined into a farmstead; a recent restoration has given it back its old face. The village is said to have been spared by the plague that struck Chieri in 1630.
