Moriondo Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 820 · Postal code: 10020

The first thing you notice at Moriondo Torinese is the castle, set high above the houses. Landolfo, bishop of Turin, had it built in the eleventh century for defence against the marquisate of Monferrato, which began just beyond; a park spreads around it over the crest of the hill. It is a private house today, owned by a family of industrialists from Castelnuovo Don Bosco.

Among its owners was Virginio Bruni Tedeschi, grandfather of Carla Bruni, who was also mayor of Moriondo from 1946 to 1974, nearly thirty years. From outside you can see the crenellated brick tower, the retaining wall under the terrace and the arched windows of the lower wing.
