Buttigliera d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,552 · Postal code: 14021

In 1263 Asti took the castle of Mercuriolo from the Biandrate and founded a villanova beside it, on a spot called Butiglaria. The village someone else had decided into being still kept wide freedoms, set down in a statute and held on to even after it passed to Savoy.

Next to the parish church of San Biagio, where Giovanni Bosco was confirmed, the bell tower finished in 1789 to a design by Mario Ludovico Quarini rises above 52 metres, the tallest in Monferrato. Palazzo Freylino, bought in 1771 by the count who left it his name, had a botanical garden; when the house changed hands nobody tended it and the garden vanished.
