Montaldo Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 749 · Postal code: 10020

The name first appears in 1159, in a diploma of Barbarossa granting the Curtem de monte alto to the Church of Turin. The castle on the hilltop is first named in 1187, when the bishop granted rights to local lords on condition that they walled at least half of it; the document also sets civil, military and criminal rules.

The castle, after long neglect, now houses a hotel. The eighteenth-century church of Santi Vittore e Corona is the old parish church: one nave, a rounded brick apse, the bell tower against its left side. The cemetery has grown around it, and it serves as the cemetery chapel.
