Pavarolo first appears in an imperial diploma of 1047, which names the place, its castle and San Secondo's chapel. Below the castle the tower stands alone, the one on the town's coat of arms: whether it began as a defence or as the gate of the walled borgo is unknown, but in the eighteenth century it became a bell tower with a clock.
The baroque parish church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo stands close by, where the earlier church of San Secondo was; a fresco on the vault shows the saint with the village behind him, recognisable by castle, church and tower. Felice Casorati lived and worked here; his Ragazza di Pavarolo dates from 1937.
