In 1694 Victor Amadeus II sold the fief of Nichelino to Count Occelli for ten thousand lire; eleven years later, in the middle of the war against France, for another thousand lire the count also bought the right to appoint the mayors. A century earlier the village had been the epicentre of a plague: the first case, in 1586, in a house of the Palazzo quarter, and twenty men suspected of spreading it were executed in Piazza Castello in Turin. The built-up area, like that of Moncalieri, is cut by the forty-fifth parallel, exactly halfway between the pole and the Equator.
But the reason to come is another: Nichelino keeps one of the Savoy wonders, the hunting lodge of Stupinigi, the rococo masterpiece Filippo Juvarra designed in 1729 for the royal hunts — a UNESCO site with the Savoy Residences, with the bronze stag on top of the dome and the great rond-point of woods and avenues converging on it. Napoleon stayed here; today it holds the original furnishings and major exhibitions. The town around it, grown with Turin's twentieth-century industry, was granted city status only in the year two thousand, and lives the redemption of its parks along the Sangone and of its nearness to the capital: central Turin is twenty minutes away, Stupinigi five.
