Moncalieri

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 55,875 · Postal code: 10024

Moncalieri castle, perched above the Po at Turin's gates, is one of the UNESCO-listed Savoy Residences: here Victor Emmanuel II signed the famous Proclamation of 1849, and here princess Maria Letizia held court. The royal apartments are open to visitors; the town below, with Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and its porticoed streets, keeps the air of a small capital.

Moncalieri is also a town of codified flavours: its tripe — "la tripa 'd Moncalè" — is a unique cured speciality among Piedmont's traditional products. The Po hills, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, begin at its parks.
