Pancalieri

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,985 · Postal code: 10060

Pancalieri lies in the plain on the left bank of the Po, and the Angiale canal runs through it: mills once worked along its course. Two explanations of the name circulate: the hemp for ships' ropes that sailors called pancalere, or the "piano calante", the ground sloping down to the river.

This is the mint village: peppermint was introduced in 1865 by the pharmacist Chiaffredo Gamba, and the crop is distilled here in the stills known in Piedmontese as lambicc. Around 1533 Davide Rizzio was born here, musician and secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots; in 1884 cholera took many lives in the village.
