Casalgrasso

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,448 · Postal code: 12030

Casalgrasso lies on the Po plain in Cuneo province, where the Varaita ends. The name seems to come from casali and grassi, the fertility of land drained by the twelfth century. Towards Racconigi, outside the village, the Rocca di Carpenetta stands among the fields: first a ricetto, it also belonged to the abbey of Staffarda.

The village kept the memory of Marshal Catinat, who in the service of the Sun King found the locals at the ford ready to resist him. He brushed them aside; then, having beaten the Savoyard army at Staffarda, he remembered the slight and burned the village. Rebuilt, Casalgrasso still carries the motto Hostibus resistit.
