Feast of Saint Anne
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of July
On the last Sunday of July Virle Piemonte, a municipality of 1,191 inhabitants in the province of Turin, celebrates the patronal feast of Saint Anne (sant'Anna).
Virle lies on the plain south of Turin, on the Lemina torrent, and its name has two explanations: it may come from vicus Irlae, the village of the Roman Irla family — a white marble slab carved with the word IRLA turned up in the San Paolo district — or from Virguletta, land planted with the rods used to tie vines. The town council added the second name in 1864.
It is believed the land was all marsh and wood until Benedictine monks drained it in 1029; the first houses went up towards Pancalieri, in the Podi district, where the ground is higher. Of the Romagnano castle only the Portassa survives, properly called Porta Boni Loci.
