Porte

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,113 · Postal code: 10060

Porte lies where the Val Chisone opens onto the plain; in Piedmontese the village is Pòrte, in Occitan Las Pòrtas. At Malanaggio a mill has long ground talc and graphite, and the company that ran it carried the whole valley in its name: Talco e Grafite Val Chisone.

Above the road, at the top of a flight of steps, stands the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo. Pilasters and pale panels divide the yellow front; a painted lunette in the pediment shows the archangel, and the bell tower beside it carries the clock face below an open belfry closed by a balustrade.
