Torre Pellice

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,573 · Postal code: 10066

Torre Pellice is the main centre of the Waldensian church in Italy. The hamlet of Coppieri marked the edge of the ghetto the Waldensians were confined to, and is now a wholly rebuilt village. In 1686 an edict of Victor Amadeus II ordered the temples pulled down, the children baptised as Catholics and the pastors exiled; a third of the Waldensians chose to resist, and in the end won the right to leave for Switzerland with their weapons in hand.

On 17 February 1848 Charles Albert's edict ended the discrimination. The news was carried through the whole valley, the most isolated hamlets included, by lighting fires visible from far off; those fires have been lit every year since, on the night before.
