Villar Pellice

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,120 · Postal code: 10060

The name Villar recurs in many Piedmontese municipalities and probably goes back to the Middle Ages, when Occitan was spoken here. Villar Pellice lies in the Val Pellice and, according to nineteenth-century information, the municipality was said to be mostly Waldensian: the temple stands at the top of a stone stairway between two walls, pale-fronted, its bell tower ending in a spire.

An ecomuseum opened in 2006 in the old Crumière felt mill. On 29 May 2008 forty thousand cubic metres of mud and debris broke away from the Rio Cassarot basin and swept through the hamlet of Garin: two houses destroyed, many others damaged, roads flooded, cars overturned, four dead.
