Roure is a scattered comune, the name of no village at all: people live in four hamlets along the Chisone, from Castel del Bosco, the lowest, through Balma and Roreto up to Villaretto, the last before Fenestrelle. The town hall is at Balma; around them, hamlets now almost all empty. The name comes from Occitan roure, oak, and from Latin robur: strength, resistance, hardness, the root of robust.
To the fascist regime that name sounded too French. In 1937 the comune became Roreto and in 1939 Roreto Chisone, and the original etymology went with it; the oak stayed on the coat of arms. In 1975 the inhabitants voted the old name back by referendum.
