Fenestrelle

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 553 · Postal code: 10060

Fenestrelle sits halfway up the Val Chisone, in a basin under Monte Orsiera and Monte Albergian, and was always the pass between upper and lower valley. Its name is traced back to Finis Terrae Cotii, the edge of the land of Cozio, king of the tribes allied to Rome. It long belonged to the Dauphiné, and passed to Savoy with the whole valley only under the treaty of Utrecht of 1713.

The fortress climbing the slope has three forts and seven redoubts, each able to hold out alone, linked by roads, outside stairs and a covered stairway of 3,996 steps. From the late eighteenth century to fascism it was also a state prison.
