Salza di Pinerolo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 78 · Postal code: 10060

Salza di Pinerolo fills a side valley of the Valle Germanasca and has no real village: only hamlets on the slopes, with the seat at Didiero. Until 1863 it was called simply Salza. The name comes from Latin salicia or salicetum, a place thick with willows; another reading traces it to a salt spring, or to ground where salt was given to livestock.

The arms carry two crossed pickaxes and, below, a snow-capped mountain with six firs, three on each side. In the mid-nineteenth century quarries of white, grey and bardiglio marble opened on the mountains around, and several talc mines ran near Fontane; on the north side of the valley some two hundred hectares of silver fir still hold on, a species very limited in the Western Alps. The borders moved about: Fontane came from Prali in 1892, in 1928 the commune went into Massello, and in 1947 it was autonomous again.
