Salerano Canavese, Saleiran in Piedmontese, is a small comune on the edge of Ivrea. Its arms are split in half: above, on red, a gold S between two cornucopias full of fruit; below, on blue, two old-fashioned muskets crossed under an embattled silver band. Nobody explains why plenty sits next to weapons.
The church of Sant'Urbano has a portico on stone columns in front, sheltering the door and three frescoed panels, and behind it a cylindrical tower of cobbles and brick, its top cut short. Villa Pallavicino, the Pallavicino Mossi marquises' summer house, has changed hands several times since 1995, when the last of the family died, and still awaits its restoration.
