Samone

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,614 · Postal code: 10010

Samone turns up in 955 in a diploma of Berengar, among the villages of the Pedagna, and in 1278 in a pact between Ivrea and the marquises of Monferrato: the town and some lands nearby, Samone among them, were to bear no passing armies, cavalcades or other levies. The village had no parish priest until 1787; before then services were held in a small chapel.

That chapel is still there, inside the parish church of San Rocco: baroque, single-naved, raised at the end of the eighteenth century. The saint is painted in an oval above the door; the bell tower with its clock stands back to one side.
