Banchette

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,280 · Postal code: 10010

The name probably comes from the sandbanks the Dora Baltea left here: in the old documents it is Bancellæ, and later Castrum Banchettarum. The old core stands around the castle, on a rocky spur above the river bed; the newer houses came up further south, on the flat. The tributary is called Roggia Rossa, once Dora Rossa, from the reddish colour of its bed.

In 1335 the parish of Banchette was taken into the archpriesthood of the Chapter of Ivrea together with Salerano and Samone. That union then came apart piece by piece: Samone broke away in 1786, Salerano in 1789.

📅 Every year, on 25 July; the «Con Luna e Stelle» Carnival ends with the burning of the Cossa

Banchette celebrates Saint James on 25 July; the Carnival, the event most loved by the townspeople, includes the «Con Luna e Stelle» Carnival, with a night-time parade of the typical Cossatera and Cossatè characters, masks and allegorical floats, ending with the burning of the Cossa amid songs and dances.
