Lessolo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,982 · Postal code: 10010

Lessolo climbs the right bank of the Dora Baltea where the valley opens out, inside the morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea, and first appears in a document of 1044. From 1159 there is record of a "Community of the men of Lessolo" holding common property — land, the oven, the press — and electing its consuls every year in the assembly of household heads, which met in the square before the chapel of San Rocco.

Fifteenth-century statutes set down how it worked and its pacts with the nobles. On Lessolo's land the mine named after Brosso, the village above, was worked until 1964.
