Rivarossa

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,626 · Postal code: 10040

The first settlement stood on the Borgallo knoll, between the eighth and ninth centuries. In the eleventh century a Cluniac priory of Santa Maria Maddalena rose beside it, perhaps founded by Arduin himself; the monks drew settlers and the place grew.

In 1313 Rivarossa fell to Philip I of Savoy-Achaea, and the Valperga, allies of the marquises of Monferrato, sacked it repeatedly to hurt that Savoyard branch. The French and Spanish incursions of the sixteenth century brought down the castle and the walls: a chronicle of the day says that after the raid of 1539 almost every villager was dead. It refilled slowly.
