San Maurizio Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 9,646 · Postal code: 10077

San Maurizio lies some twenty kilometres north of Turin, on the plain between the Stura and the Vauda. The name appears in documents in the first century after the year 1000, vicus de Sancto Mauritio, because the castle chapel was dedicated to the commander of the Theban Legion; before that the place had been called Lifiniasco.

The date that counts is 1335: marchioness Margherita of Savoy granted the community the land to found a new settlement, close to the old one but fortified. Activity moved there and the ancient core, with its castle, slowly disappeared; the pieve went on serving as parish church until 1813. The territory was once far larger: the Vauda became a comune of its own, San Francesco al Campo.
