San Carlo Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,874 · Postal code: 10070

The place used to be called Vauda di Ciriè. In 1684, according to Bertolotti, it broke away from the marquisate of Ciriè by paying a ransom of six thousand Piedmontese lire; its present name it obtained in the nineteenth century, when the king granted a petition from the inhabitants. Under fascism, in 1927, it was joined back to Ciriè, and became an autonomous comune again in 1946.

The Vauda that gave it the old name is the rise the town sits on: the word comes from the Old German wald, forest, and the rise is what remains of the moraine of the Stura di Lanzo glacier. Almost half the territory is military land, and the army has used it for some hundred and seventy years.
