In 1576 Emanuele Filiberto wanted an outlet to the sea, and to get it he gave Cirié away: he bought the port of Oneglia from the D'Oria and paid with this town, raised to a marquisate for the occasion. The Genoese came to live here, and the last marquis, Emanuele D'Oria, was also the first mayor.
The name comes from the turkey oaks: here the Romans set the Castrum Cerreti to watch over the Lanzo valleys, and later, christening it, they turned it into Saint Cyriacus. In 1306 Margaret of Savoy moved into the castle, cancelled the taxes and set up the market: it is still held, on Fridays. There are 18,415 residents.
