The name comes from the Piedmontese roba somé, "steal the donkey". The town sits on a terrace looking over the Stura di Lanzo and the mouth of the valleys, at the gates of Turin, beside the Mandria nature park.
On 17 December 1981 the council passed a resolution declaring Robassomero a "denuclearised zone": no atomic weapons and no nuclear plants to be installed here. It was a symbolic act, but it made this the first denuclearised comune in Italy.
