Nole

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,910 · Postal code: 10076

Nole lies in the lower Canavese, at the foot of the Valli di Lanzo, northwest of Turin, crossed by the Stura di Lanzo stream. It appears for the first time in a document of 1209 as Novolis; the name is said to come from Novulae, clearings among the woods, though a local tradition prefers to derive it from the Latin nolle, not wishing to submit, on account of the protests against Ciriè over dues and tolls.

In 1336 Margaret of Savoy allowed the inhabitants to build a recetum around the church, a ring of walls with ditches, drawbridges and portcullises: a stretch of wall and the remains of the tower-gate towards Villanova survive. On 15 November 2006 the bell tower collapsed onto the parish church of San Vincenzo, reopened in 2011.
