Pertusio is a Canavese village scattered in hamlets at different heights, below the Sacro Monte di Belmonte. The Valperga and San Martino stronghold has gone, but the spot is still called Castellazzo; at the end of the fourteenth century the village joined the Tuchinaggio revolt and in 1391 settled with the count of Savoy's treasury, paying a heavy fine.
The sanctuary of San Firmino grew out of a wayside pillar. The story goes that a French officer heading home after the battle of Pavia of 1525 fell ill here and recovered by praying to the bishop of Amiens; in thanks he raised the pillar with the saint's image, and its base still stands inside.
