In 1019 Emerico, lord of Barbania, Corio, Busano and Rocca, founded a Benedictine nunnery here; the first abbess was Libania, daughter of the local lord, later beatified. Traces of the moat and drawbridge survive, seen from the church square on the front of the tower: that tower was the gate of the fortified quarter and of the ricetto.

The tower clock, with its stone counterweights and pendulum, gave way in the nineteen-sixties to a modern mechanism. The parish church of San Tommaso Apostolo, of the sixteenth century, began as the chapel of that nunnery. Busano is a young comune: until 1948 it was a hamlet of Rivara.
