San Raffaele Cimena

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,107 · Postal code: 10090

The hamlet of Valle Baudana has a very rare microclimate: mild winters and cool summers, so that citrus, prickly pears, bananas, palms and even papaya grow there, a plant otherwise raised in Italy only in Sicily and under glass. The National Research Council has studied it and puts it down to the shape of the valley and the flora on its floor.

The town owes its name to a chapel that Byzantine soldiers are said to have dedicated to the archangel Raphael, protector of travellers, as a good omen for the way home. The arms tell the same story: the archangel with staff and satchel, Tobias in the water holding a fish, and the white dog. Cimena, whose Ligurian name comes from cim, height, joined San Raffaele in 1818.
