Gassino Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 9,536 · Postal code: 10090

Gassino lies on the right bank of the Po, at the crossing of the road to Casale Monferrato and the one that climbs over the hills towards Cinzano and Asti. Three valleys open on its territory, Bardassano, Bussolino and Baudana, which in the town banner become three silver hoes.

The soil is of marine origin and full of fossils, shells and crinoids, studied in the nineteenth century by the palaeontologist count of Rovasenda; from here comes the name of the Gassino limestone, long used as cut stone and for lime. The plain yielded a dark red clay good for pottery and bricks: kilns had been working since the Renaissance, and from 1564 Emmanuel Philibert requisitioned a whole year of local output for the Citadel of Turin.
