Baveno

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,917 · Postal code: 28831

The origin of the name is disputed: it probably comes from the Roman name Babenus or from the gentile form Babenius. Two Roman stones are set in the front of the parish church, a tomb slab now unreadable and one dedicated to the emperor Claudius; the via Severiana Augusta ran through here, up from Milan to the lake and on to the Simplon.

In 1014 the emperor Henry II gave Baveno to the nuns of San Felice in Pavia. The town then lost weight and had to yield first place in the Vergante to Lesa. In the mid seventeenth century it counted some 180 families and fourteen lands under it: of those fourteen names five survive, among them Feriolo and Oltrefiume.
