San Bernardino Verbano

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,384 · Postal code: 28804

San Bernardino Verbano is not one village but several: it was formed in 1928 by joining Bieno, Santino and Rovegro, with the town hall at Santino, the middle hamlet. The houses lie in separate clusters, and part of the land climbs into the Val Grande National Park. The fief of Rovegro, together with Suna, belonged to the Moriggia of Milan from the fifteenth century.

At Bieno the church of the Purification of the Virgin stands at the end of a gravel yard: a pink plastered front without ornament, a porch of three arches on granite columns, and a roof of stone slabs. Beside it the bare stone wall of a lower building remains.
