Gravellona Toce

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,751 · Postal code: 28883

The name comes from the Celtic grava, meaning gravelly riverbed, and the specification from the river Toce. Gravellona stands where the Strona flows into the Toce, near Lake Maggiore and at the point where the roads climbing from the plain towards the Simplon pass converge: which is why it has been inhabited since antiquity.

In the nineteen-fifties, in the hamlet of Pedemonte, a necropolis came to light with at least 129 tombs, from the fifth century BC to the fourth AD; beside it Roman buildings were excavated that the archaeologists named the Fisherman's House, the Oven House and the Stables. The settlement was abandoned after a great landslide broke away from monte Cerano.
