Strona

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,157 · Postal code: 13823

Strona is a scattered municipality, its town hall in the hamlet of Fontanella Ozino. The name comes from the stream just to the west, whose name would come from Celtic roots for running water; the arms repeat it as a wavy blue band. Until the thirteenth century this was mostly forest, which around the year one thousand emperor Otto III gave to the bishop of Vercelli.

It was one of the five Mortigliengo cantons, with Mezzana, Soprana, Casapinta and Crosa; in 1627 they split into separate municipalities, Strona being the western part. From the late eighteenth century wool and hemp were woven here; the Rivetti mill opened in 1866.
